LeafTrove support
How to bring the highlights and notes on your Kobo eReader to your iPhone or iPad, what is free, and what to do when something goes wrong.
Import highlights
Choose a free route for your iPhone or iPad.
Bring in your highlights, one step at a time.
Choose your iPhone or iPad. Follow the actual LeafTrove controls, with help whenever you get stuck. Free import needs no sign-in or subscription.
Before you start
- A compatible physical Kobo eReader and a USB cable that supports data transfer. An e-book account or a phone reading app alone is not enough.
- An iPhone or iPad with iOS or iPadOS 17 or later.
- LeafTrove imports text highlights and notes from EPUB/KEPUB books. PDF, handwriting and whole-book transfer are not supported.
Which features work with your eReader depends on its model and firmware. Whatever Kobo you have, you can ask for help; no subscription or trial is needed for that.
No eReader at hand? Download LeafTrove and choose “See the sample library first” on the last page of the “How it works” introduction. It needs no sign-in, computer or Kobo.
LeafTrove is an independent third-party app by HoMade Works. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Rakuten Kobo Inc.; the Kobo name is used only to describe compatibility.
Three ways to import
Choose by the port on your iPhone or iPad. If you are not sure, open Settings → General → About on the device and check “Model Name”.
- USB-C iPhone or iPad
- iPhone 15 or later (including iPhone Air); iPad 10th generation or later, iPad Air 4th generation or later, iPad mini 6th generation or later, and USB-C iPad Pro models. Read directly by cable.
- Lightning iPhone or iPad
- For example iPhone 11 to 14, iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation), or iPad 6th to 9th generation. Export on a computer.
- Any of them, with a subscription
- On compatible Kobo models you can also set up Wi-Fi wireless updates. A USB-C iPhone or iPad sets them up by cable with no computer; Lightning devices need a computer for the first setup.
In LeafTrove 1.3.1, an empty library shows “Bring in my Kobo notes”, and the app guides you by the port on your device. USB-C reads the Kobo directly by cable. On Lightning, it first asks whether you have an adapter that can be powered (for example Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, which needs its own power); answer “No, export on a computer” or “Not sure, export on a computer” and it takes you to the computer export file instead. Not every adapter lets the eReader connect, so the computer export is the safer choice when in doubt.
USB-C iPhone or iPad: read directly by cable
Free, with no sign-in. No computer, assistant or Wi-Fi setup is needed.
- Connect. Connect the Kobo to the iPhone or iPad with a USB-C cable that supports data transfer.
- Tap “Connect” on the Kobo.
- In LeafTrove, tap “Bring in my Kobo notes” (once your library has books, “Import” next to “My books”) → “Choose my Kobo”.
- Choose the eReader. In the Locations list, choose KOBOeReader itself (do not open a folder inside it) and tap “Open”. If you do not see the Locations list, see the help below.
- Check and import. Check the number of books and notes in the preview, then tap “Confirm import to library”.
LeafTrove only reads and never changes the eReader. Keep the cable connected until reading finishes. When you have new highlights, connect and read again; new notes are added and existing ones updated.
Can’t see KOBOeReader?
On iPhone, the file picker may open on “Recents”, or inside “On My iPhone” showing an empty “LeafTrove” folder. Tap “Browse” at the bottom (you may need to tap it twice) until the Locations list appears.
On iPad, the Locations list is in the sidebar on the left.
The empty “LeafTrove” folder belongs to the app and is always empty. Your notes are not missing.
KOBOeReader is not in the Locations list: Confirm that you tapped “Connect” on Kobo, and check the cable, plugs and power. Allow the device to recognize the accessory.
No prompt appears on the Kobo: Wake the Kobo, leave it on its home screen and reconnect. Check both plugs and try a known data cable. If the device reports insufficient power, try a compatible powered USB hub or use computer export. Charging alone does not tell you whether the disk is connected. Check for KOBOeReader in the next steps.
If reading still fails, you can use export on a computer instead; it is free as well. Keep the error text and contact support.
Lightning iPhone or iPad: export on a computer
Free, with no sign-in and nothing to install. You need a Mac or Windows computer with Chrome or Edge. USB-C devices can use this route too.
- Connect the Kobo to the computer and tap “Connect” on the Kobo. In Chrome or Edge, open the LeafTrove web export page.
- Select KOBOeReader and download. Select the disk itself; when reading finishes, download the
.leaftrovefile. Your notes are processed on your computer and are not uploaded. - Send the file to your iPhone or iPad. Use AirDrop from a Mac; from Windows, email it to yourself or use your own cloud drive. The file contains your private notes, so send it only to yourself.
- Import it. Save the file to the Files app. In LeafTrove, tap “Bring in my Kobo notes”, then “Choose export file”. On a Lightning device, first answer the adapter question with “No, export on a computer”; on a USB-C device, the button is under “Use a computer export file instead”. Check the preview, then tap “Confirm import to library”.
After reading finishes, eject KOBOeReader on the computer before you unplug the cable. Export again when you have new highlights.
Organize & reread
Find a note, write a thought or return to a passage.
Tidying your library: duplicates, two eReaders and rescue files
The same book appears twice: Merge duplicate books
After a Kobo reset or a new link, the same book received by Wi-Fi wireless updates can appear twice. Open Settings → Advanced → “Merge duplicate books” (Settings → My Library in 1.3.1), check the preview (duplicate books and notes, and the thoughts and tags that will move), then tap “Merge duplicate books”. Notes, favorites, tags, thoughts and review settings stay on the book that is kept, and no note that appears only once is deleted. LeafTrove does the same tidy-up when it imports and opens, so it may simply say “No duplicate books found.”
The same book on two eReaders: shown together
When your library has notes from two eReaders (for example a Libra 2 and a Libra Colour), a book that is on both appears once on the shelf, marked “2 readers”; on the book page, notes are listed by reader and kept separately. Books bought in the Kobo store are joined automatically. A book you copied onto the eReader yourself is joined only after you choose “Show together with this book from another reader” in the book page’s menu and confirm it is the same book. Choose “Show separately” in the same menu to split it again, or turn off “Show the same book from different readers together” in Settings → Advanced (Settings → My Library in 1.3.1). This changes only how the shelf and book pages look: no note is merged or deleted, and thoughts and tags stay on their notes. Books received earlier are joined after that eReader’s next Wi-Fi update or cable read.
Restore notes from a rescue file (provided by support)
If notes are missing from your LeafTrove library and you backed up the eReader with the computer assistant, contact support first. Whether a rescue file can be made depends on what the backup contains; if it can, we send you one. Save it to the Files app, open Settings → Advanced → “Restore notes from a rescue file” (Settings → My Library in 1.3.1), tap “Choose rescue file”, check the preview and tap “Confirm restore”. The restore runs on this device and only adds back missing notes: existing notes, favorites and thoughts are not overwritten or deleted, and nothing is written back to the Kobo. The rescue file contains private notes, so keep it only on your own devices.
Sync & subscription
Understand iCloud, optional Wi-Fi updates and plans.
iCloud: your library on iPhone and iPad
iCloud shares your LeafTrove library, favorites, covers, thoughts, tags and collections between your own iPhone and iPad. It does not fetch new highlights from the Kobo. The review list and reminder settings stay local to each device.
Use the same Apple account with iCloud enabled on both devices. In LeafTrove Settings, open “iCloud sync” and enable library sync; this needs a subscription. If data has not appeared yet, check the Apple account and network on both devices.
What is free and what needs a subscription
Free
- Import by cable or web export, with no sign-in
- One library with search, favorites and “My collections”
- “My thoughts”: up to 20 of your own; thoughts you have written always stay readable, editable and exportable
- Share cards: the minimal style, as a picture or text, with a small LeafTrove signature
- Archive: hide highlights or whole books without deleting them
- Today’s pick
- The small Home Screen widget
- One reminder a day at a fixed time
- Export to Markdown or JSON
- The sample library, without an eReader
Subscription
- Unlimited “My thoughts”
- Monthly recap, every month, with five monthly share cards
- More for share cards: 8 more styles, background colors, four sizes including wide 16:9, three text sizes, the cover and tags, editable text, no signature, full title
- Schedule for review
- Note tags
- Up to 5 reminders a day, with random time windows and quiet hours
- Medium and larger Home Screen widgets, and Lock Screen widgets
- iCloud sync between iPhone and iPad: library, favorites, covers, thoughts, tags and collections
- Wi-Fi wireless updates on compatible models
Monthly and yearly plans have the same features. A one-month free trial is available if Apple confirms your eligibility. The current price, currency and trial terms are shown on Apple’s purchase screen. Buying and restoring do not need a LeafTrove account. Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled in Apple Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
To see current prices in the app, open “Settings” → “LeafTrove subscription and restore purchases” (in the “Account and plan” group). Viewing the plans does not start a subscription; Apple asks you to confirm a purchase.
After a subscription ends, the notes you imported can still be read, searched and exported, and importing by cable or web export stays free. The thoughts you have written can still be read, searched, edited, deleted and exported. Share cards keep the minimal style.
iCloud sync works between your own iPhone and iPad; it does not fetch new highlights from the eReader. The review list and reminder settings are kept separately on each device. Compare free and subscription.
Wi-Fi wireless updates (subscription, compatible models only)
After a one-time setup, the eReader uploads new highlights and notes over Wi-Fi when you tap sync in its menu. You check the result on the eReader, then open LeafTrove to update. It does not run by itself and it is not real-time.
In LeafTrove 1.4, open “Settings” → “Wi-Fi wireless updates” → “Kobo link and status” (in 1.3.1 the entry is “Wi‑Fi cloud account (optional)”), then choose the cable setup option. This setup writes tools after a backup and needs Apple sign-in and an active trial or subscription. Free reading by cable is a separate, read-only action.
- USB-C iPhone or iPad: one cable connection, no computer and no pairing code. Sign in with Apple and make sure your trial or subscription is active. In LeafTrove, tap “Set up Wi-Fi wireless updates” on Home or on the import screen, connect the Kobo with a USB-C cable, tap “Connect” on the Kobo, then tap “Back up and install”. LeafTrove backs up the eReader’s reading database on this device, then writes the LeafTrove tools and a single-use USB pairing grant for that Kobo. Unplug when it says so; the Kobo installs and restarts.
- Then on the Kobo: turn on Wi-Fi and tap “拾讀” (LeafTrove) in NickelMenu. The first tap runs a safety check offline, on the Kobo only. When it asks, hold the power button until the Kobo turns off (a short press only puts it to sleep), turn it on and tap “拾讀” again. The Kobo then links itself and sends its first notes, and LeafTrove shows the progress.
- Lightning iPhone or iPad: the Mac or Windows assistant. With a USB cable that supports data transfer, you connect the eReader to the computer twice, then pair it over Wi-Fi with a code that the Kobo shows and you enter in LeafTrove. Pairing codes are used only in this flow.
- Re-linking. If you unlinked the Kobo in the app, or a pairing stopped halfway, connect it again by cable to a USB-C iPhone or iPad and tap “Link this Kobo again” in LeafTrove (see the steps). Older pairing and sync tools on the Kobo are updated in the same connection. Unplug and tap “拾讀” on the Kobo; no code is needed.
- You also need a Kobo that can connect to Wi-Fi, LeafTrove from the App Store, Sign in with Apple, and an active trial or subscription. One account links one Kobo at a time.
- Availability depends on the eReader’s model, hardware revision and firmware. LeafTrove and the assistant check them, and each device still has to pass a backup and staged checks; when a condition cannot be confirmed, setup stops before installing the system components. A model or firmware that is not listed is unconfirmed, not necessarily incompatible. Free import by cable or on a computer does not depend on this.
Tested on physical eReaders: Libra 2 with firmware 4.38.23697, and Libra Colour with 4.45.23697. Libra Colour has been tested through USB-C setup, pairing, Wi-Fi sync and receipt of new notes in LeafTrove. For Libra Colour 4.46.23836, the official firmware has been checked, but the same firmware has not yet been tested on a physical eReader. Setup still checks each device.
Check the conditions before you start a trial or subscribe: model and firmware table. Problem reports are welcome for every model; tell us the model, firmware and what the assistant reported.

The assistant and the eReader menu are in Traditional Chinese only for now. The complete step-by-step guides are on the Traditional Chinese support page: setup with the computer assistant (Traditional Chinese). LeafTrove itself has an English guide under Settings → “Wi‑Fi cloud account (optional)” → “Wi-Fi setup guide”.
These are the menu items LeafTrove adds to the eReader’s NickelMenu:
- “拾讀” (LeafTrove: links the Kobo and shows the link status; in the assistant flow it also shows the pairing code)
- “拾讀 同步筆記” (LeafTrove: Sync notes; tap it again for the progress or the result)
- “拾讀 完成設定” (LeafTrove: Finish setup, used only during setup with the computer assistant)
Older LeafTrove tools may show these menu items instead. Connect the Kobo by cable to a USB-C iPhone or iPad to check for a tool update.
- “拾讀 配對/繼續” (LeafTrove: Pair / Continue)
- “拾讀 配對結果” (LeafTrove: Pairing result)
- “拾讀 筆記同步結果” (LeafTrove: Note sync result)
Day to day: tap “拾讀 同步筆記” on the Kobo, tap it again after about a minute to check that it finished (older tools: “拾讀 筆記同步結果”), then open LeafTrove and update.
Assistant downloads: LeafTrove Kobo Assistant 0.7.7
The assistant is needed only to set up Wi-Fi wireless updates from a Lightning iPhone or iPad, or if you prefer to export with it. Reading by cable, web export and Wi-Fi setup on a USB-C iPhone or iPad do not need it. The same download does both jobs.
The assistant’s interface and the menu it adds to the eReader are in Traditional Chinese for now. The steps are on the Traditional Chinese support page.

The Microsoft Store currently lists 0.7.7; it and the ZIP here are updated separately. Check the version shown when downloading. Open Microsoft Store.
If your eReader is already paired, downloading a newer assistant does not update the eReader by itself. Connect it by USB and follow the assistant’s prompt “更新同步工具” (Update sync tool); it makes a backup first and keeps the existing pairing, your books and notes, and data waiting to be sent. With a USB-C iPhone or iPad, no computer is needed: connect the Kobo and tap “Connect the Kobo: check status or update LeafTrove tools” under “Kobo link and status”.
Fix a problem
Missing notes, error messages and app updates.
Notes are missing on my Kobo
Keep the reader and all backups as they are. Do not sign out, reset, downgrade, delete and re-add books, or repeatedly reinstall the tools. Saving notes in LeafTrove does not restore them on the reader.
- Check the model and software version in Kobo Settings → Device information, and whether the affected books still open.
- Contact support with these details. Do not send complete databases, books or private notes yet. Restoring notes on Kobo depends on the available data and cannot be guaranteed.
Notes missing in LeafTrove too? Once support has checked your backup, we may be able to send a rescue file that adds the missing notes back to your LeafTrove library through Settings → Advanced → “Restore notes from a rescue file” (Settings → My Library in 1.3.1) (how it works). It restores to LeafTrove only and does not write to the Kobo.
Windows: find an earlier assistant backup
On the computer where you used the assistant, press Win + R. Paste this path and press Enter:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\LeafTrove\Kobo Backups
Keep every folder and tell support the folder dates. If the path is not found, try:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\LeafTrove\USB-Backups
Look for a backup from before the notes disappeared. Do not overwrite the reader with an old database; support will explain any files needed and their use first.
Kobo, LeafTrove and iCloud sync are different
Kobo sync saves eligible purchased-book annotations to the Kobo account. Books added yourself and their annotations are not backed up to that account; keep a separate copy.
LeafTrove wireless updates bring readable notes into LeafTrove; they do not complete a backup to your Kobo account.
iCloud shares LeafTrove data between Apple devices; it does not write notes back to Kobo or replace a reader backup.
Export a notes file
Cannot select the disk, or KOBOeReader is missing?
Use Chrome or Edge on a computer, not a phone or Safari. Confirm Kobo is connected. If the tool uses a folder picker, select the disk’s root. If Finder/File Explorer cannot see it either, check the connection and cable. More export help.
An error, or no notes to export?
Check for EPUB/KEPUB text highlights or notes on Kobo. PDFs, handwriting and full books are excluded. Keep the error text, model and firmware; contact support. Do not modify or send the full database.
Troubleshooting
My subscription or trial does not show as active
Purchases, restoring and cancelling are handled by Apple: on the iPhone or iPad, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
If Apple shows the trial or subscription as active but LeafTrove does not, open Settings in LeafTrove → “LeafTrove subscription and restore purchases” (in the “Account and plan” group), then tap “Restore purchases”. Do not buy again. If it still is not confirmed, note the message on screen and contact support.
Deleting the app or your LeafTrove account does not cancel an Apple subscription.
LeafTrove cannot find KOBOeReader when reading by cable
On iPhone, the file picker may open on “Recents”, or inside “On My iPhone” showing an empty “LeafTrove” folder. Tap “Browse” at the bottom (you may need to tap it twice) until the Locations list appears. On iPad, the Locations list is in the sidebar on the left. See the full picker help
The Kobo was unlinked, or pairing stopped halfway
Connect the Kobo by cable to a USB-C iPhone or iPad. In LeafTrove, open Settings → “Wi-Fi wireless updates” (called “Wi‑Fi cloud account (optional)” in 1.3.1) → “Kobo link and status”, tap “Set up with a cable (recommended)”, then “Link this Kobo again”, or “Update and link again” when the Kobo has older tools. LeafTrove writes a single-use pairing grant and updates older pairing and sync tools in the same connection. Unplug, turn on Wi-Fi on the Kobo and tap “拾讀”: it links itself with no pairing code, and notes waiting to be sent are kept.
With a Lightning iPhone or iPad, tap “拾讀” on the Kobo (older tools: “拾讀 配對/繼續”) to get a new pairing code, then enter it under “Kobo link and status”. If the app says the Kobo is linked to another LeafTrove account, unlink it with that account first.
A message shows a code such as SOURCE_TYPE_UNSUPPORTED
Messages from the app, the web export page, the assistant or the eReader may include a diagnostic code in capital letters, often starting with SOURCE_. The code only says which step stopped; it contains no note text, serial number or account.
Send it to support exactly as shown, with your Kobo model, firmware and app version. You do not need to reset the eReader or delete notes.
No new notes appear after a Wi-Fi update
On the Kobo, tap “拾讀 同步筆記” (LeafTrove: Sync notes) again to see whether the upload finished; with older tools, open “拾讀 筆記同步結果” (LeafTrove: Note sync result). If it shows data still waiting, tap “拾讀 同步筆記” again. Then open LeafTrove and update. Keep the eReader’s Wi-Fi on and its clock correct. Notes already on your device stay readable offline.
Some books have no cover
Web export and assistant export include the covers the Kobo has cached. A book without a cached cover is imported without one; its notes are still imported in full.
The same book appears twice in my library
After a Kobo reset or a new link, the same book received by Wi-Fi can appear twice. Update to LeafTrove 1.3.1 or later, open Settings → Advanced → “Merge duplicate books” (Settings → My Library in 1.3.1), check the preview, then merge. Notes, favorites, tags, thoughts and review settings stay on the book that is kept. If it is the same book on two different eReaders, see the same book on two eReaders.
I have written 20 thoughts and cannot add more
The free plan includes 20 of your own thoughts; notes imported from the eReader do not count. At the limit, the thoughts you have written can still be read, searched, edited, deleted and exported, and a subscription makes them unlimited. Early users who installed before 1.2 have the same limit. When a subscription ends, every thought you have written is kept.
Exporting your notes, and removing data
LeafTrove exports your books and notes as Markdown or JSON (Settings → “Export all books”); every note keeps its book title. Before you delete a cloud account or remove the app, export what you need and check that the file opens. Signing out or deleting the cloud account does not remove the library on your device and does not cancel an Apple subscription. See Account and local data.
More cases, including pairing and sync messages on the eReader, are covered on the Traditional Chinese support page, which also has a diagnostic code lookup (Traditional Chinese).
LeafTrove 1.5: Monthly recap, a look back at what you read this month.
- Monthly recap (subscription): the books you read, the days you highlighted, the lines worth another look and the month in brief, on one page. The calendar shows each day's book cover, and every past month is there too.
- Monthly share cards (subscription): Overview, Collage, Cover calendar, Spines and One line, five ways to turn your month into a picture.
- Archive (free): hide highlights or whole books you no longer want to see. Nothing is deleted; bring them back anytime in Settings → Archived.
- Share cards now carry a small LeafTrove signature (subscribers can hide it) and show the book's main title without the subtitle.
- Fixed an issue where a widget could occasionally make the system close the app; everything also feels smoother.
LeafTrove 1.4.1
Turn a highlight into a card for social posts or friends, or share it as text. The minimal style is free; a subscription adds 8 more styles (bookmark, poster, cover, poem, journal, botanical, index card, and vertical for Chinese and Japanese text), background colors, four sizes including wide 16:9, three text sizes, the cover and tags, editable text and no signature. The picture is made on the device; nothing is uploaded. Since 1.5, cards carry a small LeafTrove signature and show the book’s main title; subscribers can hide the signature or show the full title.
LeafTrove 1.3
Open a highlight and tap “Thought” in the actions row. The free plan includes 20 thoughts, and notes imported from the eReader do not count; when 3 or fewer are left, the editor shows how many. The thoughts you have written can always be read, searched, edited, deleted and exported, and a subscription makes them unlimited. They stay on this device unless you enable iCloud sync with a subscription.
Use “My collections” to group books. Collections made from books are free; they do not change the books or notes on the Kobo.
Note tags need a subscription. Below a note’s tags, tap a tag to add it and tap it again to remove it: first the tags on this note, then the ones you use most, then suggestions such as “Quote”, “Key point” and “Idea”. A suggestion becomes a tag only when you tap it, and suggestions stop appearing once you have 8 tags of your own. “More…” opens the full editor. You can then filter or search by tag. Collections organize books; tags organize notes.

- Email: brad.ho.2026@gmail.com
- In the app: Settings → “Help & About” → “Report your model and experience”.
Never send your full private database, a complete backup, passwords or Apple account credentials. The error text and the step where it stopped are enough.
Help is available for every Kobo model, with or without a subscription. What works depends on the model and firmware.

Your notes and privacy
Reading by cable and web export never upload your notes: the web export page works inside your browser, and the imported library is stored on your device. Wi-Fi wireless updates and iCloud sync are optional. Details are in the privacy policy.
